Around 2 a.m. on October 6th, I met with David Braun in his Seattle apartment to discuss his screenplay for Perishable Paris that won this year’s Writers Guild Award for the best original screenplay. Known for his gripping psychological thriller screenplays, such as Ida’s Midnight and The Gallery, Braun has perfected the craft of subtle shock value. His writing is honest, disturbing, and captivating. He digs through the wounded minds of his characters, inviting readers to do the same.
For the interview, we sat opposite each other on gold upholstered armchairs in his living room, sipping hot cocoa, the only warm beverage he consumes since quitting coffee ten years ago. His wife decorated their apartment with a love for anything antique or Venetian. He’s learned to appreciate intricacy that extends beyond the page just as she’s accepted his sporadic nature and self-inflicted insomnia.
