The blinding sirens stare at the needle you use while you receive phone calls from people venting about another relationship turned sour. Another failed course. Another family problem. The issues repeat. The pain worsens. The solutions disappear. Ambition was never there. No one ever tells the man on a wheelchair to learn to run. But everyone tells the man glued to his couch to get up and do something with his life.

People expect you to fix them when you’re putting more effort toward destroying yourself. It starts with some mean words from others. Then, mean words come from your own mouth. Now your brain’s a parrot, repeating faults. You’re asked to say one nice thing about yourself, so you tell the group you have a nice smile. You don’t add how your smile is slightly crooked and your teeth are stained. Everyone claps and moves on. You go home and notice you have uneven eyes.
